The holidays are a time for gathering with loved ones and making wonderful memories. But when you’re a surrogate, this season can be even more meaningful. After all, you’ve carried (or are carrying) perhaps the greatest gift of all for another family—a precious baby.
So, how can you make this time of year extra special as a surrogate? We asked our surrogates and case managers, and they gave us some great advice!
Reconnect with your intended parents
Life can be hectic these days, and it’s easy to lose touch with people for an extended period of time. But the holiday season provides a great opportunity to check back in with special people in your life.
Here are some of the ways our surrogates stay connected with their intended parents:
“We do a Christmas video call with the family from my sibling journey.”
“Sending Christmas cards! We send one and get one from our IP’s!! <3 It’s special to see the family so happy after having their own baby and during such a cute time (the holidays) it makes you feel warm and know you did a great thing!”
If you live near each other, you have many options when it comes to celebrating. If the intended parents live farther away, scheduling a phone call, sending a gift or care package, or even hosting a virtual dinner party are great ways to reconnect.
Revisit a meaningful place or memory together
The relationship you build with your intended parents is unique and powerful, and the holiday season is the perfect time to reminisce about—or even recreate—a special memory.
Here is what one of our surrogates did:
“This year was the first time I met with my IP and her sweet little boy since he was 1 because of covid. He is now 3 and we met to watch a holiday light show in Sacramento. The same show we went to see with them when my kids were meeting my IP for the first time. It was amazing to see how he has grown into a smart young man.”
We love this idea!
Practice extra self-care
From traveling to see family to hosting get-togethers to scrambling to finish your shopping in time—this season can be stressful. So, it’s important to take care of yourself during this time, especially if you’re pregnant.
Be sure to listen to your body, understand your limits, and get as much rest as you can. Stay hydrated and make healthy choices (at least most of the time). If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, talk to someone, and ask for help if you need it. It’s important not to stretch yourself too thin. And try to carve out some quality “me” time—even a quick walk around the block or 10-minute meditation can make a big impact.
We hope these tips help make this season extra special!
