Every surrogacy story is special, and yours is no exception. That’s why we’re so excited about our Storytellers series.

This week we’re hearing from Blythe, who was a surrogate with SPS before becoming a case manager. Blythe is also a certified childbirth educator and helps our surrogates and intended parents prepare for the birth, learn how to advocate for themselves in their birth, and more!

Learn what inspired Blythe to become a surrogate, the special relationship she has with the intended parents, and the profound impact surrogacy has had on her.

Why Blythe decided to become a surrogate

I decided to become a surrogate because it was something that I had been dreaming about doing since I had my first son. After I gave birth to him, the first words out of my mouth were “I wanna do that again!!” I was hooked on giving birth! I loved it. I loved being pregnant, the birth, the delivery—everything about it!

Around that same time, you were beginning to see surrogacy more on the news and on TV and reality shows. I knew that it was something I could do and wanted to do. I wanted to be able to help a family have a child. I have been blessed with such easy pregnancies and births and I knew I could help a struggling family. I went on to have three more children, and after my fourth was born something in me just said “APPLY.”

What brought Blythe to SPS

I chose SPS because after applying and getting approved by other agencies, SPS was the only one to offer a case manager. I could not be happier with my decision.

Getting matched and getting pregnant

I was matched with a great couple and we dove right into becoming very good friends. We would go out to lunch after every appointment and we chatted all the time. We became very close, which is something I had put in my profile. I wanted a very close relationship with the family I was going to carry for.

I got pregnant on the first try. I found out that it was a baby girl, and I had gender reveal cupcakes made. We went out to lunch, and I had my IM bite into the cupcake to reveal pink frosting!!!

“I remember feeling like a superhero”

Everything was going smoothly until the end of the pregnancy when we found out that the baby had a genetic mutation. The news added a lot of extra stress to the journey, but SPS was wonderful and with me every step of the way.

The birth was so beautiful and special. Both IPs were in the room. The IM cut the cord and was able to do skin to skin immediately. It was so special to see the IP’s reaction to their baby for the first time. I remember feeling like a superhero—I had just created a family!

We have remained close. My surrogate baby calls me Auntie Blythe and I have been able to babysit her. Being a surrogate was the most rewarding experience.

Thank you for being a part of Storytellers, Blythe!
